Gutterflower
When I was a young runaway, I lived in a really nasty part of Philly. Sometimes when I had a few bucks, I walked to a little corner market and I would pass a horrible empty lot full of trash, discarded hypos and old junk people would just dump there. I remember one crisp spring day as I walked by I caught a flash of color out of the corner of my eye. A tiny daisy was growing in a clump of dirty weeds. The sun was shining and the little yellow daisy seemed like it was glowing from within. My eyes just filled with tears. It was like a tiny glimmer of beauty in a very ugly part of the world and an ugly time in my life. It was as if I was seeing a tangible vision of hope. Years later I made piece when I remembered that moment.
